A model is not enough to make a service work
Track 01 · Managers and Business Leads · English edition
What you will learn to do
distinguish the model from the components that allow the service to consult information and act.
Fictional pedagogical case: a premium services company is preparing to automate its refunds.
The course
The director observes a demonstration. The assistant reads a request and writes a convincing response. He wants to know if the same setup will be able to process refunds the following Monday.
The demonstration does not yet answer this question. The model produces a result based on the information provided to it. To find a reservation, the service must query an application. To know the refund conditions, it must access a valid rule. To move money, it needs an execution function and authorization.
The word "assistant" can hide this assembly. Two services using the same model can have very different capabilities. One writes a draft. A second can modify a reservation. Their consequences depend on the connections and the rights granted.
The manager must follow a request from end to end. Where does it come from? How is the customer identified? Which version of the policy is consulted? Who calculates the amount? At what point does the action become effective?
Failures must also be examined. If the reservation is not found, the system must have a defined behavior. A fluid response is no substitute for missing data. If the refund tool returns a timeout, a new attempt must not produce a second refund.
This map makes it possible to locate responsibilities. It also reveals what a demonstration has not yet shown.
Your decision
Draw the path of a request through to the refund. Place the reservation, the refund policy, the model, the execution tool, and the human approval. Indicate where the system must stop if decisive information is missing.
Formulate an answer before opening the answer key.
Open the reasoned answer key
An acceptable proposal begins with sufficient identification of the request and the reservation. It associates the applicable policy with the case, then produces a justified proposal. The amount and authorization are verified before execution. The result of the operation is recorded.
The absence of a reliable reservation or an applicable rule must lead to a request for information or an escalation. The schema may vary depending on the company. It must make visible the transition between proposal and effective action.
Production to keep
components, exchanges, and stop points.
Evaluation criterion
The map distinguishes proposal from action and locates the stop points.
