Tsinghua iCenter: the robot must understand the space where you install it

Chinese programs / Industry and mobility / English edition

What you will learn to do

Identify the environmental conditions to be examined before expanding a robotic task.

Original VOCE course. Chinese reference: the iCenter course on embodied intelligence scenarios presents perception, navigation, and planning. The case is fictional.

The course

The course announced by Tsinghua iCenter in June 2026 links embodied intelligence to work scenarios. It notably presents environmental perception and navigation. The location where a robot is installed is part of the problem to be addressed.

A fictional museum wishes to use a robot to transport equipment. The trial was conducted in an empty corridor. The director plans the same route during opening hours, when visitors occupy the space.

The destination has not changed, but the task conditions have changed. Obstacles may appear. The available path may differ. The robot must be able to signal that it cannot perform the action under the planned conditions.

The manager must therefore describe the mission as more than just two points on a map. They indicate authorized zones, traffic conditions, and situations that must trigger a stop or intervention. The criteria are defined with the competent persons for the equipment and the location.

This analysis also serves to allocate roles. Who can change the route? Who intervenes when a passage is inaccessible? Who examines an incident? These questions must be resolved before the organization relies on the robot for a regular activity.

A written course prepares for system reading and framing decisions. It does not replace real trials or safety validation. The project must maintain service conditions compatible with what has actually been examined.

Your decision

The robot succeeds on the route in an empty corridor. The team wishes to use it during a highly crowded event. Define what the first trial demonstrates and the questions to be resolved before this new use.

Formulate an answer before opening the answer key.

Open the reasoned answer key

The first trial demonstrates behavior on the empty route under the observed conditions. It does not demonstrate the ability to navigate during the event. Describe the relevant differences, accessible areas, and interruption situations.

Prepare the checks with the site and equipment managers. Also define the replacement service if the robot cannot navigate. A successful demonstration is not enough to expand the scope.

Production to keep

A map of environmental conditions, the limits of the first trial, and recovery responsibilities.

Evaluation criterion

The participant treats the change in environment as a change in the mission.

Read the explanation

Welcome to VOCE courses. Choose a course from the catalogue: it will open on a dedicated page. Read the objective and the explanation, then work on the proposed case before opening the answer. Each course contains fewer than five thousand characters, along with its references. You can follow the ten steps of the first track, or start with the subject useful to your company. For training centres, the evaluation criteria indicate what the participant must be able to do. The themes of the future Campus are presented separately from the courses already available. They will also cover gigafactories, robotics, and the light workforce.
