Tsinghua: moving from a promising material to compliant production

Chinese programs / Industry and mobility / English edition

What you will learn to do

Compare an announced production capacity with the volume accepted in an industrial case.

Original VOCE course. Chinese reference: Tsinghua program for materials technology experts, presented by its continuing education department. Calculations are fictional.

The course

Tsinghua's continuing education program dedicated to materials experts combines material and process issues with their industrial application. This approach is useful for reading gigafactory projects.

In a fictional cell factory, a pilot line has produced accepted components. The team wishes to increase its throughput. The investment committee is primarily looking at the announced capacity for the future line.

Throughput refers to a volume produced over a duration. It is not sufficient to describe what will be usable. The company must apply its acceptance criteria and count the volumes that satisfy them. An increase in gross volume may be accompanied by an increase in rejects.

The manager must make the results comparable. Do the figures refer to the same products and the same period? Are setup times included? What happens to the rejected components? Assumptions must appear in the calculation.

This reading prepares a progressive decision. The committee may request a higher throughput trial with the same quality criteria, then examine costs and inspection needs. It must also distinguish a measured result from a supplier projection.

The pedagogical goal is to learn how to read industrial capacity. The course does not formulate a forecast for a real factory and does not conclude that a Chinese or European process is superior by origin.

Your decision

Two fictional trials last one hour. Trial A produces 1.000 components, of which 950 are accepted. Trial B produces 1.200, of which 900 are accepted. Calculate the compliant volume and the acceptance rate. Can one conclude that B improves production?

Formulate an answer before opening the answer key.

Open the reasoned answer key

A provides 950 compliant components with an acceptance rate of 95%. B provides 900 compliant components with a rate of 75%. Based on this indicator and this duration, B provides fewer accepted components despite a higher gross throughput.

The economic decision also requires costs, reject handling, and the comparability of conditions. Two trials are not enough to establish the sustainable performance of the process. They justify an investigation before promising a gain.

Production to keep

A comparison separating gross throughput, acceptance rate, and compliant volume.

Evaluation criterion

The participant calculates the compliant results and specifies the information still required.

Read the explanation

Welcome to VOCE courses. Choose a course from the catalogue: it will open on a dedicated page. Read the objective and the explanation, then work on the proposed case before opening the answer. Each course contains fewer than five thousand characters, along with its references. You can follow the ten steps of the first track, or start with the subject useful to your company. For training centres, the evaluation criteria indicate what the participant must be able to do. The themes of the future Campus are presented separately from the courses already available. They will also cover gigafactories, robotics, and the light workforce.
